Ripping Audio (SFX, Voice Lines and Music) from Freekstyle

Post by NuMetalMessiah94 »

Greetings to anyone who is reading this.

For quite sometime I've been looking for a way to rip out sound effects, voice lines and including the music from one of my most cherished childhood games that I used to play along time ago on the GameCube, and that is Freekstyle. Curious on how to rip them out by myself, I decided to do some researching around the net to if there were any tutorials, posts or even including looking back at some old forums to see if they had any leads of ripping out these files within the GameCube version or including the PlayStation 2 version of the game. Surprisingly enough, it led me to these four programs for the Playstation 2 version, which are PSound, MFAudio, jPSXdec & Cube Media Player (Which mind you, these programs were used for different other games during the time when I looked them up to see if there was any way of ripping audio/music out from the ISO file). Learning to see how these worked, it seemed simple at first, but got very confusing once handling the programs. Unfortunately, after looking up some tutorials and including some forums to figure out these programs and their workings for the ISO file, these four programs didn't work out for me (Or it could be that I'm still doing this wrong). My issues were the following for all four programs.

PSound: [Every time I've started up the program (from both versions of 2.00 & 2.01), it states "ASPI initalization failed. Direct CD-ROM commands are disabled". Searching around for the solution, I found out that you can use a ForceASPI for it, but since the forum that I read upon was back in 2002 (and this was during the XP days) I'm not too certain if this method still works. Even if so, after pressing OK, it brings me to the main UI of the program and I can see everything that it has to display. Reading a few forums on what to do with this program, I've done the exact following. File > Scan File > Name of ISO. I've waited for a few minutes and it looked like it worked. Pressing on the file(s) that were loaded in and were scanned through, played and nothing happen as each and individual file weren't working nor had sound. After having no luck, I've decided to extract the files from the PlayStation 2 ISO and decided to see if it would work individual with it's folder contents. Looking through each folder, I've stumbled upon that these files are underneath various filing types, such as AV., trk., Isc., SFN., LSC. and PAL (Which these files are present within the GameCube ISO version as well when extracting the files from the ISO) Assuming the voice lines were underneath AV, I decided to redo the process of scanning them through. Once done, I clicked upon play once more and nothing still. So I'm stumped upon how the processes works.]

MFAudio: [Knowing this program can downsample audio files, I've thought this could of worked for the audio file conversion of exporting audio files, but unfortunately this program is only meant to reduce the sizes, not to extract.]

Cube Media Player 2: [Hearing that this program can be the best for extracting audio from PlayStation 1/2 games, I've decided to take a shot on the program and see what I can do. I've tried looking up tutorials or even forums that talked about it and see where I can go from there. Seeing that it kinda works similar to PSound, I've seen a Reddit post stating that when placing the ISO into File > Scan file... (Ctrl+F) it will automatically scan the file for you. Doing so, after waiting a few hours, I've pressed okay and nothing appeared. Looking back through and finding other solutions, it seems that this program had discontinued and rarely has any keys to them at all anymore for it's "full" functionality usage.]

jPSXdec: [When searching around for another possible answer, jPSXdec was one of them, but unfortunately after reading the fine lines, this only works for PlayStation 1, not for PlayStation 2.]

After multiple tries and attempts, I've decided to give up on the PlayStation 2 version of the game and decided to head on over to see if I can do anything with the GameCube version that I had saved onto my emulator folder. Looking through the net to see if there were any different programs to use for the GameCube version, I've stumbled upon two programs that seemed interesting, but one of them led me to nowhere. These programs were GameCube ISO Toll & VGAudio. After figuring out these programs, I've decided to take them and work them out as best as I could, but.. As for the PlayStation 2 side, it happen with me with the GameCube version as well. Here were my issues for these two programs.

GameCube ISO Toll: [Assuming when dealing with this program, I thought this would help me along the way of ripping out the voice lines, SFX and including the music, But.. Unfortunately this was only just a content ripper to rip out the content folders, not the files themselves.]

VGAudio: [Last but not least was VGAudio. Unfortunately the program for this doesn't seem to open or is having troubles starting up. Tried multiple times of setting up the files, but the program wouldn't budge.]

So... This left me stumped and confused on the matter of ripping out the direct audio files from the game. Still not giving up on the matter though (which sometimes I do wanna give up) I still tend on wanting to know or even learn how to extract these audio files from this game that I've cherished for nearly 20 years. So if anyone out there that has more experience or has more knowledge on the matter, is there any way that I can extract and execute these voice lines, SFX and music within a WAV or MP3 format for use? If so, please, please, PLEASE, help me. If so, I'll be much very happy of it.

(This is for PS2 version, no idea about GC).

The musics are inside the "ALL.AV" file which resides in the "AV" directory (except the main menu one, which is inside the FE.TRK file located at the "FEND" directory), along with the rider and announcer voices during the gameplay. In addition to the main menu music, FE.TRK also supposedly includes the voices of the rider during the selection menu. And I think the sound effects were inside the individual TRK files located at the "B" and "L" directories or the "FREEKDAT.PS2" file on the root of the disc. Now, the problem is either the AV or the TRK/PS2 files has a very annoying file structure inside making extraction a complete nuisance (You can see why in this post @XeNTaX). But, there are "rawer" ways to obtain most of the assets inside, by using VGMToolbox's Advanced Cutter/Offset.

For the musics and most rider voices, use these settings to extract them
IMPORTANT!: Don't forget to copy the files out of the disc to somewhere's first.

You can play the extracted files with foobar2000 + vgmstream plugin

However, no luck for the rider voices during menus yet. As I said before, the way the game's assets laid out were a complete nuisance.
