Novell ZenWorks Handheld Management ReadStatusRecordData Integer Overflow Vulnerability 10.18.11 BACKGROUND ZenWorks Handheld Management is used to configure, deploy, and manage handheld devices in the enterprise environment. It provides provisioning and management support for a number of smartphone devices. For more information see the following link on the vendor's website. http://www.novell.com/products/zenworks/handhelds/ DESCRIPTION Remote exploitation of an integer overflow vulnerability in Novell Inc.'s ZenWorks Handheld Management could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the affected service. The vulnerability occurs when the ZENworks Handheld Management Server process parses a malformed request with the the 0x71 opcode. The 0x71 opcode contains a subopcode field, and when this field is set to 0x2c, it is possible to trigger an integer overflow vulnerability. The vulnerable code reads a 32bit integer from the request, and then multiplies it by 8 to determine the size of a heap buffer. This calculation can overflow, which results in an undersized buffer being allocated. The buffer is then overflowed with data from the packet, which can corrupt heap structures and lead to the execution of arbitrary code. ANALYSIS Exploitation of this vulnerability results in the execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the affected service, usually SYSTEM. In order to exploit this vulnerability, an attacker needs the ability to connect to the target on TCP port 2398 (or whatever port the service has been configured to listen on if the default has been changed). No authentication is necessary. DETECTION iDefense has confirmed the existence of this vulnerability in ZenWorks Handheld Management version 7.0.2.61213.
